
When people try to explain the scale of AI’s impact they reach for big, familiar metaphors: the microprocessor, the steam engine, or even the internet. Those are useful, but they miss a crucial point about how technology changes organisations and product teams. A better analogy is containerisation — and not the shipping container, but Docker-style software containers and the ecosystems they enabled.
What containerisation really changed
Containers (see Docker and Docker Hub) did something subtle and profound: they standardised the developer experience and reliably encapsulated behaviour. That meant teams could package an app once, run it anywhere, and rely on orchestration systems like Kubernetes to manage scale and resilience. The visible outcomes were faster delivery, easier scaling, and the rise of cloud-native architectures — but the real shift was organisational.
Containerisation lowered the friction between idea and production. It changed how teams were organised, how platforms were built, and how value flowed across organisations. The shipping container (physical) reorganised logistics; Docker-style containers reorganised software delivery and, crucially, empowered product teams to move faster with predictable infrastructure.
Why AI looks more like Docker than the microprocessor
The microprocessor created new categories of devices and made computation cheaper and smaller. Its impact was hardware-led and consumer-facing. AI, by contrast, is shaping up to be platform and workflow-led. Here are three parallels with containerisation that matter to leaders:
- Standardised artefacts and registries: Just as containers had Docker Hub, AI now has model hubs and registries — Hugging Face is a good example. Standard packaging makes models discoverable, reusable and composable.
- Orchestration and infrastructure: Running models at scale needs runtimes, GPUs/accelerators, and orchestration. Companies such as NVIDIA and Intel are building the hardware and software stacks that make AI production-ready — much as container runtimes and orchestrators did for microservices.
- Platformisation of developer workflows: The biggest productivity gains came from platforms that hid complexity. AI platforms (internal model registries, MLOps pipelines, inference runtimes) will do the same for product teams: reduce friction, encourage reuse, and shift focus to outcomes.
What this means for product and technology leaders
If you treat AI like a new device or feature to be bolted onto existing products, you will miss the point. Instead, treat AI like an infrastructure layer that enables new ways of working. Practically:
- Invest in an internal AI platform — model registries, deployment pipelines, observability and cost control. This is the equivalent of your internal container platform: one place teams can ship from.
- Treat models as products and infrastructure — use SLAs, versioning, rollback, testing and observability. Models should be first-class items in your product catalogue.
- Enable autonomous product trios — product, design and engineering teams must be given clear outcomes and easy access to model APIs and data. The reduction of operational friction is where value will appear.
- Focus on data and feedback loops — containers gave repeatability; AI needs continuous feedback to avoid degradation and bias. Design feedback loops into product experiences from day one.
- Plan governance proportionally — governance should protect users and the business, but not become a bottleneck. Define clear decision rights and guardrails rather than exhaustive approvals.
Real-world echoes
Look at how cloud-native adoption unfolded. Organisations that built an internal platform (for example, platforms inspired by Google’s internal systems that later showed up as Kubernetes) shifted from centralised ops to empowered teams, accelerating innovation. In the AI world, companies that provide model platforms and inference runtimes are playing the same role that Docker and Kubernetes providers did for microservices. Meanwhile, hubs like Hugging Face are already behaving like Docker Hub for models — discoverable, versioned and community-driven.
The article that sparked this piece (AI Will Not Make You Rich) rightly cautions against naive profit expectations. But its critique complements the container analogy: value follows the reduction of friction and the creation of ecosystems, not one-off feature lifts.
Putting it into practice — a short checklist
- Build or adopt a model registry with versioning and metadata.

- Define SLAs and observability for model behaviour in production.
- Empower product trios with sandboxed access and clear outcome measures.
- Start small with protected experiments and scale winners through the platform.
AI will be revolutionary because it removes frictions in how value is composed, delivered and scaled — the same reason containerisation mattered. For CEOs, CTOs and product leaders the implication is straightforward: invest in platforms, treat models as infrastructure, and redesign teams around outcomes. Do that, and you won’t merely add features; you’ll change how your organisation creates value.
